This feature was first released as a trial only dedicated for celebrities and larger certified accounts, possibly because of all the hate comments they are constantly greeted with.
Due to the incredible amount of hate comments made, not only on Instagram but all over the internet and social medias, Instagram decided to introduce a feature that let´s people decide if they want to turn of comments completely, which is a good thing, right?
“Our goal is to make Instagram a friendly, fun and, most importantly, safe place for self-expression,” Nicky Jackson Colaco, Instagram’s head of public policy, told The Washington Post.
With this feature, Instagram also sends out clear signals that they are aware of the extensive harassment that is going on, on their platform and that they are working hard with coming up with solutions to the problem. It also sends out signals to other social media platforms that this is a problem that they should prioritize to a very wide extent in the new year.
Not only that, Instagram is also adding the ability to “heart” a specific comment to encourage positivity throughout the community. This is also a sign that Instagram proactively is trying to make their comment fields and platform a happier place filled with good vibes.
