However, due to the increasing number of coronavirus cases, the decision was made to comply with the social distancing requirement.
The company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, announced that it had reopened 42 of its offices across the globe to allow employees to plan ahead. During the remote work extension announcement, Sundar said that the 12-month extension would enhance employee flexibility by enabling them to balance between taking care of themselves and their loved ones and work.
Like Facebook and other giant companies, Uber announced an extension of the company’s work-from-home policy until June 2021. The announcement came a week after Google announced a similar addition, without giving out an indication of what will happen beyond that period. The extension has come when the organization has opted to scale down its operations in Asia.
For instance, in May this year, the company slashed down about 3,000 jobs and closed 45 offices worldwide, including the headquarter offices in Singapore. In July, the company closed its Mumbai offices as part of the stated decision. After laying off about six hundred permanent employees in Asia, particularly in India, the company insisted its decision would not affect the existing jobs because the workers have shifted to remote work.
Generally, giant companies, led by those in the tech industry, have sorted a new approach to business continuity through remote work policy.
