Is 2021 a Big Year for TikTok?

TikTok has taken the world by storm in recent years. It has been referred to, fondly, by the slightly older millennial generations as “the new vine”, which no longer exists as a social media platform. As a supposed replacement, TikTok seems to be doing very well indeed. But what is TikTok?

This social media platform is completely free and allows users to post, watch and share videos. These short videos usually come with the background music of current chart hits embedded in them. So, why is it that TikTok has soured into popularity recently? 41% of TikTok users in 2019 were recorded as being between the ages of 16 to 24. This is a staggering number of young users on the platform and is probably a key element to their success. If one young person is sharing a video, other young people will want to be part of the action, leading to a higher number of downloads, and an increase in the number of monthly users.

Because it is specifically designed to allow young people to express themselves in a creative way, be that by lip-syncing, or dancing to a funny video, TikTok has soared in popularity amongst teens and made it the must-have app for many.

This direct appeal to specifically the under 18 markets has baffled adults the world over. The whole concept of the app can seem alien to adults attempting to understand the hype. However, the number of adults downloading and using the app has been on the increase.

In less than 18 months, the number of adults using TikTok grew an impressive 5.5 times, rising from 2.6 million users in October 2017 to 14.3 million users in March 2019. This spike can almost definitely be accredited to Jimmy Fallon, who, as part of one of his shows, asked his audience to take part in some challenges on TikTok. This undoubtedly will have increased downloads of TikTok and may have even convinced some adults to enjoy using the app on a more regular basis. 

But where does TikTok sit with other competitors in the social media market? Rather than simply just a replacement for Vine, TikTok has been heralded as a social media platform designed for creators. In this way, it trumps the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or even Snapchat, as this is not their primary aim. For all intents and purposes, it looks like TikTok is here to stay.
