What is CBD Oil?

CBD, the three letter acronym that seems to be cropping up everywhere nowadays. For those unfamiliar with the name, CBD stands for cannabidiol. This is a naturally occurring compound found in high doses in the hemp plant. A common misconception is that CBD based products are the same as marijuana, however, the psychoactive element (THC – tetrahydrocannabinol) which provides the ‘high’ in weed, is practically absent in CBD products.

CBD is just one of many cannabinoids which is found in the hemp plant. Producers of CBD products (notably oils) extract the compound from the plant using a process called CO2 supercritical extraction, which involves separating the elements by heating the plant matter at certain temperatures for specific amounts of time. When producers speak of a ‘full-spectrum’ CBD oil it means that they have not isolated the CBD from the other naturally occurring compounds. Consequently, the benefits and properties of the plant will be enhanced in the oil, as the cannabinoids will be interacting with each other the way nature intended.

CBD products come in all shapes in sizes, and is this market is rapidly expanding, it seems as though there is something for everyone, from skin creams, to vapes, to various drinks and food products, but the most common form is CBD oil. CBD oil can be ingested directly, orally, or some people choose to incorporate it into cooking or infuse drinks with it.

Due to changing regulations and legislations, such as the passing of the farm bill in the US in late 2018, hemp-based CBD is gaining popularity quickly all over the world. However, as it has only recently been legalized in many places, extensive research has not been carried out. Governments are now allocating the necessary financial backing to doctors and scientists to find out the exact potential of CBD. So far we know that it has anti-anxiety properties, as well as improving blood flow, and even helping muscle pain.

All this is thanks to our endocannabinoid system, which consists of CB1 and CB2 receptors which interact with CBD. The endocannabinoid system is key to many physiological processes such as: mood, stress, energy levels and blood pressure – which all deeply influence our day to day experiences.

Consequently, mounting success stories and testimonies have come to claim that CBD oil can alleviate: skin issues (such as acne and psoriasis), anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, muscle pain, and period pains amongst many others. People are beginning to incorporate CBD oil into their lifestyle to cope with such afflictions. Meanwhile, studies are currently being carried out to see how CBD could help epilepsy and MS – amongst other complex conditions.
